Plume Moths (Pterophoridae) |
The Pterophoridae are distributed throughout temperate and tropical areas of the world; the family includes at least 73 genera and over 1,000 species (many tropical species remain undescribed). Small to medium-sized moths (wingspan 13-41 mm) with slender, deeply notched forewings; the hindwing with three deep lobes, often fringed. Usually tan, brown, or gray with darker markings. When at rest, plume-moths hold the wings at right-angles to body. These moths are diurnal and nocturnal. Adults take nectar and pollen from a variety of plants. The larvae are leafrollers, stem borers, or leaf-browsers.
