Caddisflies (Trichoptera)

The caddisflies (Trichoptera) include ca. 14,500 described species (45 families) of small moth-like insects with two pairs of hairy membranous wings. They are closely related to the Lepidoptera. The caddisflies are best known from their larvae, which inhabit a wide variety of aquatic habitats. The larvae of many species make protective cases of gravel, sand, twigs, leaves or other debris.
