Jewel Beetles (Buprestidae) |
The Buprestidae (Jewel Beetles or Metallic Wood-boring Beetles) are one of the largest beetle families with 775 genera, and ca. 15,500 species; they are distributed nearly worldwide. Bright coloured or plain beetles, often iridescent; 3-80 mm in length, although the majority are under 20 mm. The body is cylindrical or elongate to ovoid, tapered at the posterior end. The antennae are usually serrate. Adults feed on foliage or nectar, sometimes on pollen. Larvae tunnel through stems and roots of diseased or decaying trees or shrubs, although some species feed on the sapwood, and are capable of killing healthy trees. In other species the larvae are leaf- and stem miners, or gallmakers.
