Ground Beetles (Carabidae) |
The Carabidae are a large family with 23 subfamilies, 1,500 genera, and 34,000-40,000 species. They inhabit a wide range of terrestrial habitats on all continents, except the Antarctica; the greatest diversity is found in the tropics. The majority have shiny black or metallic ridged elytra (wing covers), a groove with a comb of hairs on the foreleg, and paired glands in the lower back of the abdomen, producing noxious secretions to deter predators. Most species are predatory, hunting other invertebrates (insects, worms, snails, etc.). The Carabidae are mainly nocturnal, but the tiger beetles (Cicindelinae) are active diurnal hunters.
