Adelgids (Adelgidae) |
The Adelgidae are a small family with 8 genera and ca. 50 species; closely related to the aphids. They are native to the Northern Hemisphere, but some species have been inadvertently introduced to the southern hemisphere. Tiny insects (2-3 mm). Unlike aphids, the adelgids lack tail-like cauda and cornicles; front wings with reduced venation. Wingless females and nymphs are covered with dense woolly wax. A complete life cycle lasts two years. All adelgids associate with conifers, and feed on needles and twigs; some introduced species are serious pests.
