Leaf-footed Bugs (Coreidae)

The Coreidae includes 3-4 subfamilies, ca. 270 genera, and over 1,900 species. They are distributed in a variety of habitats nearly worldwide, but most diverse in the tropics and subtropics. Medium to large bugs (7 to 45 mm long); the family includes some of the biggest Heteroptera. The body shape is variable (broadly oval, elongated, or slender). Coreids possess parallel veins on front wings, 4-segmented antennae, and thoracic repugnatorial glands used for defense. Many species have leaf-like expansions of the hind tibiae, sometimes with spikes on the inner edge. Others are covered with spines and tubercles, or have elaborate antennae, humeral angles, or femora. Some tropical species are brightly colored. The leaf-footed bugs feed on plant sap.
