Lantern Flies (Fulgoridae) |
The Fulgoridae consist of ca. 143 genera and over 700 species found mostly in the tropics; some taxa enter subtropical and temperate zones in North America and East Asia. Fulgorids are moderate to large planthoppers, up to 95 mm in length. They exhibit reticulate venation of the hindwings, and often the forewings; many species are brightly coloured. Some have a hollow snout-like head process, which could be as long and large as the body of the insect. Although often referred to as “lanternflies” fuligorids do not emit light. The majority feed on sap of trees and shrubs, sometimes grasses; many were reported from a single host species.
