Seed Bugs (Lygaeidae) |
The Lygaeidae (milkweed bugs and seed bugs) contain 4 subfamilies, 110 genera, and over 1,000 species. Many subfamilies have been removed from Lygaeidae and awarded full family status (e.g., Artheneidae, Blissidae, Cryptorhamphidae, Cymidae, Geocoridae, Heterogastridae, Ninidae, Oxycarenidae, Pachygronthidae, and Rhyparochromidae). The Lygaeidae are distributed nearly worldwide. They are small to medium-sized, 3-20 mm in length. The majority of species feed on seeds, others on plant sap; the family also includes some predatory species.
