Stink Bugs (Pentatomidae) |
The Pentatomidae encompass 10 subfamilies, ca. 900 genera, and nearly 5,000 species; nearly worldwide distribution. These bugs are usually shield-like, when viewed from above, with a large triangular scutellum, 3 tarsal segments on each foot, 5-segmented antennae, and piercing sucking mouthparts. Many species release a foul-smelling defensive spray when threatened, or handled. The majority feeds on plant sap, although the Asopinae are predatory. Stink bugs living in temperate areas overwinter as adults. Several species are agricultural pests, e.g., of cotton, corn, soybeans, etc.
