The Mantidae is the largest family of the order Mantodea, with ca. 2,000 species; mostly tropical and subtropical. Two members of this family, the European Mantis (Mantis religiosa) and the Chinese Mantis (Tenodera sinensis), were introduced in North America in an attempt to control pest insect populations.
