Snow Flea (Hypogastrura nivicola) (Fitch, 1846) |
Hypogastrura nivicola is a dark blue springtail found in North America; 1-2 mm in length. These springtails inhabit organic soils and leaf litter, but emerge in the spring when the temperature is around 0°C. They congregate in hundreds or thousands on the surface of snow, rocks, or water puddles, feeding on the algae, and fungus spores.
