The Bovidae include wild cattle, antelopes, sheep, goats, and muskoxen (8 subfamilies, 55-56 genera, and ca. 140 extant species). The family is most diverse in Africa, but bovids also occur in Eurasia, and North America. Many species inhabit tropical grasslands and savannas, but others are found in temperate and tropical forests, deserts, alpine habitats, and tundra. Most bovids are polygynous, and males usually larger and heavier than females. Males of all species, and females of many species possess horns; the size and shape of the horns is species-specific. Many species live in herds. Bovids are mostly grazers, feeding on high-fiber vegetation (such as grasses), but some species also browse, consuming leaves, twigs, bark and fruit.
