Peccaries (Tayassuidae)

The Tayassuidae are related to the Old World pigs, Suidae, but differ from the latter morphologically, e.g., in dentition. They are found in the Americas, from the southwestern United States to northern Argentina. Peccaries inhabit a wide range of habitats, from thornscrub and grasslands to tropical forests. There are three contemporary species. Peccaries are omnivores, and feed on roots, fruit, seeds, cacti and herbaceous vegetation, but also on insects and other invertebrates. They are social animals, living in groups.
