Cats (Felidae) |
The Felidae are native to every continent except Australasia and Antarctica; the family includes 2 subfamilies (Felinae and Pantherinae), 18 genera, and 40-42 contemporary species. The Pantherinae comprises the big cats (the tiger, lion, jaguar, and leopards), and the Felinae includes all other cats such as lynx, puma, cheetah, and smaller species. Wild cats inhabit a range of habitats from forests to deserts, but most species are found in treed areas. Felids are obligate carnivores with muscular bodies, strong forelimbs, retractable claws, and often striped or spotted fur. They are generally solitary, often nocturnal animals. Most species are good climbers.
