Oceanic Dolphins (Delphinidae)

Tab 3
Tab 2

The Delphinidae contain 17 genera and 30-35 species, and are found in all of the world’s oceans. The majority occurs in temperate or tropical waters, and some enter the polar regions. Most of delphinids are pelagic, but several species live in coastal waters, and even estuaries and big tropical rivers. These are small to medium-sized cetaceans, ranging from about 1.2 m in length and 50 kg weight to 8.5-9 m and 6,000-7,000 kg in the Killer Whale, the largest known dolphin. Many species are highly social and live in groups, and may travel in large pods. Individuals communicate by sound, producing low-frequency whistles, and echolocate with high-frequency clicks. Most delphinids feed on fish and squid, but few also hunt other marine mammals, including smaller cetaceans, and seabirds.
