Sac-winged Bats (Emballonuridae) |
The Emballonuridae contains 14 genera and 51 species of sac-winged or sheath-tailed bats, which are found in tropical and subtropical regions of the Old and the New Worlds. Most species inhabit forests and savannas, and roost at cave entrances, in rock crevices, ruins, hollow logs, or on tree trunks in dark places. These are small to medium sized bats, with a short and broad muzzle, a smooth face, lacking the noseleaf, simple, round ears. Most species are brown or grey, although Diclidurus spp. are white; Saccopteryx spp. have white stripes down the back. Emballonurids possess sac-shaped glands found on the leading edge of the wing, and/or throat glands which produce secretions used in social displays and marking territories. Some species form small stable harems; others are solitary or colonial. Sac-winged bats feed mainly on insects, including beetles, and occasionally on fruit.
