Opossums (Didelphidae) |
The Didelphidae are small to medium-sized marsupials found in North, Central, and South America (19 genera and over 100 species altogether). They occur in tropical and temporal forests, scrublands, and grasslands; from sea level to 3,000 m. Many species are semi-arboreal, but one is semi-aquatic. Most opossums have long snouts and prehensile tails. The females have a pouch, like all other marsupials. Opossums are opportunistic omnivores, feeding on invertebrates, small vertebrates, carrion, fruit, etc.
