Black-tufted Marmoset (Callithrix penicillata) (É. Geoffroy, 1812)

 

Synonyms: Callithrix jacchus penicillata, Black-pencilled Marmoset

 

 

Callithrix penicillata is endemic to Brazil in the states of Piauí, Maranhão, Bahia, Minas Gerais, Goiás, Mato Grosso do Sul, and the north of São Paulo (Map); established in Espirito Santo, Rio de Janeiro, Paraná and Santa Catarina through releases of unwanted pets and confiscated animals. In its new range, C. penicillata is replacing native marmosets through competition and hybridization, e.g., Buffy-tufted Marmoset (C. aurita) at lower elevations. Black-tufted Marmoset is a species of gallery and dry forests, e.g., disturbed forest and forest fragments. In Rio de Janeiro, they occur in secondary Atlantic forest. Callithrix penicillata feeds on fruits, flowers, nectar, gum, sap, and small animals, including insects, snails, frogs, etc. They live in family groups of 4-15; one breeding female per group. Formerly, Callithrix penicillata was considered to be subspecies of Common Marmoset (Callithrix jacchus).
