The Sciuridae includes tree squirrels, flying squirrels, ground squirrels, chipmunks, marmots, and prairie dogs. They are divided into five contemporary subfamilies, with ca. 58 genera and 285 species. Squirrels and their allies occurs throughout the Americas, Africa, and Eurasia, but are absent from Madagascar, Australasia and Antarctica. The Sciuridae inhabit a variety of habitats from boreal taiga and alpine meadows to tropical rainforests. They are predominantly herbivorous, feeding on seeds, nuts, fungi, lichens, etc., but many species also consume invertebrates, small vertebrates, e.g., rob bird nests of eggs and young.
