Fox Squirrel (Sciurus niger) |
Synonyms: Eastern Fox Squirrel |
Sciurus niger occurs throughout much of the eastern United States marginally entering southern Canada and northeastern Mexico. There are three distinct geographical colour phases: brown-yellow (shown on this page), dark brown, and black. Fox Squirrels prefer open forest stands with little understory, including tree patches bordering agricultural land. They are tolerant of human activities, but nevertheless have experienced a range contraction in some eastern states.
