American Red Squirrel (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus) |
Synonyms: Red Squirrel (in North America), North American Red Squirrel, Pine Squirrel |
Tamiasciurus hudsonicus ranges across boreal forests of North America, from Alaska to the Atlantic Coast, and through the Rocky Mountains and the Appalachians southwards to Arizona and northern Georgia, respectively. It was introduced to the island of Newfoundland. Up to 25 subspecies have been recognized. This species feeds primarily on the seeds of coniferous trees, and thus, its distribution embraces coniferous and mixed forests in lowlands and mountains. Other diet items include nuts, fruits, fungi, and occasionally bird eggs and nestlings, and invertebrates. North American Red Squirrel dens in tree cavities or constructs nests of leaves and moss in trees; it also uses burrows.
