Marmota monax is widely distributed in North America, ranging from central Alaska to Labrador, and south to Arkansas and Georgia, but it is absent from the Great Plains. This species prefers open country and the edges of woodland, and likely benefited from the widespread clearing of forests. It readily enters suburbs and could be seen in city parks.
