Acanthaceae (Acanthus) |
The Acanthaceae contain 242 genera and 3,950 species of herbs, shrubs, vines, and epiphytes. The majority of species are tropical, and the family is most diverse in the Indo-Malayan region, Africa, Brazil, and Central America. The Acanthaceae occur in forests, savannas, scrublands, wetlands, mangroves and fields. Plants in this family have simple, opposite leaves. The flowers are arranged in an inflorescence e.g., a spike, raceme, or cyme. In some species, the bract is large and showy. The fruit is a two-celled capsule.
