Houghton's Goldenrod is a rare endemic of the Great Lakes Region of North America. It is found mainly on the shores of Lake Huron and Lake Michigan, with one population in western New York. In Ontario, this species is restricted to Manitoulin Island, and Cabot Head in the Bruce Peninsula. Houghton's Goldenrod grows on seasonally wet alvars, calcareous sands, and interdunal wetlands.
