Betulaceae (Birch) |
The Betulaceae include two subfamilies, 6 genera, and between 170 and 230 species, distributed mostly in the boreal and temperate zones of Eurasia and North America; several species occur in the mountains of Central America, and the Andes. These are deciduous trees and shrubs, with simple, ovate, alternate leaves with entire or sharp-toothed margins. The flowers are arranged in long pendulous catkins or 2-3-flowered clusters. The fruits are nuts, nutlets, or 2-winged samaras.
