Lithospermum caroliniense is found in the Mississippi Valley and on coastal plains of the eastern United States, and in the adjacent parts of Mexico; also around the Great Lakes (L. caroliniense subsp. croceum), e.g., in Ontario, Canada. This species prefers dry or slightly mesic sandy soils in woodlands, pine barrens, savannas, prairies, coastal dunes, and also embankments along roads and railroads. This species benefits from wildfires and prescribed burns.
