Commelinaceae (Spiderwort) |
The Commelinaceae contain 41 genera and 730 recognized species, including dayflowers (Commelina) and spiderworts (Tradescantia). The family is most diverse in the tropics. These are perennial or annual herbs, terrestrial, but occasionally epiphytic. The stems are generally well-developed, and often swollen at the nodes. The leaves are entire, alternate, and often succulent. The flowers are bilaterally or radially symmetrical, with 3 sepals and 3 petals; in terminal or axillary inflorescences. The flowers lack nectar and are ephemeral, lasting only a few hours. The fruits are capsules or rarely berries.
