The Cornaceae (1-2 genera and 60-85 species) are distributed in temperate and boreal North America and Eurasia, and at high elevations in Central America, northern South America, Africa, and tropical Asia. Shrubs, trees, or perennial herbs. Deciduous; leaves simple, opposite or alternate, with entire margins. Flowers are arranged in cymes or umbels, axillary or terminal; 4-5 sepals and petals. Fruits drupes, rarely syncarps.
