Costaceae (Costus) |
The Costaceae grow in humid tropical areas of Asia, Africa, and the Americas, and contain 7 genera and ca. 140 species. These are perennial herbs, sometimes succulent, self-supporting or epiphytic. The leaves are entire, lanceolate to ovate, alternate or spirally arranged. The flowers are zygomorphic with a large bract at the base; solitary, or in terminal or axillary cymes. The fused infertile stamens form a large petal-like labellum which attracts pollinators. The fruit is a berry or capsule.
