Euphorbiaceae (Spurge) |
The Euphorbiaceae are the fifth largest family of flowering plants, with 3-4 subfamilies, 220-230 genera, and ca. 6,500 species. They are distributed in tropical and temperate areas nearly worldwide, with the greatest diversity in the South-East Asia and the Neotropics. The majority of species are herbs, annual, biennial, or perennial; some tropical species are shrubs, trees, vines, or succulents, deciduous or evergreen. Many produce milky latex. The leaves are alternate, seldom opposite, or whorled; simple or palmate. The radially symmetrical flowers are in inflorescences or solitary. The fruit is capsule, schizocarp, or a drupe.
