Gesneriaceae (Gesneria) |
The Gesneriaceae consist of 2 subfamilies, 164 genera and 3,100-3,500 species. They are distributed primarily in the tropics and subtropics, but some species occur in Europe, and temperate East Asia. The majority are perennial herbs or subshrubs, but others are woody shrubs, lianas, or small trees; ca. 20% of species are epiphytic. The leaves are opposite or spiral in arrangement. The petals are fused into a five-lobed tubular corolla. The fruit is a capsule or a berry.
