Lythraceae (Loosestrife) |
The Lythraceae contain 31-32 genera with over 600 species; found nearly worldwide, though primarily in the tropics. Many species grow in wetlands and other semi-aquatic situations; absent from arid regions. Mainly herbs, although the family also contains shrubs and trees. The leaves are simple, with smooth margins; usually opposite or whorled, sometimes alternate. The flowers are actinomorphic or sometimes zygomorphic, with 4, 6, or 8 sepals and petals. The sepals may be fused into a tube, or distinct; the petals are distinct and usually crumpled. The fruit is a dry capsule, rarely a berry. The seeds are flattened and, often, winged. The formerly recognized families Duabangaceae, Punicaceae, Sonneratiaceae, and Trapaceae are now placed in the Lythraceae.
