Melastomataceae (Melastome) |
The Melastomataceae (150-165 genera with ca. 3,000 species) are found mainly in the tropics, e.g. two-thirds are from the Neotropics. These are annual or perennial herbs, shrubs, or small trees. The leaves are opposite, rarely alternate; with 3-9 longitudinal veins. The flowers are actinomorphic to zygomorphic; borne singly or in terminal or axillary cymes. Five sepals (sometimes merged into a calyptra), and 5 petals. The fruit is a capsule or berry.
