The Nymphaeaceae are a small family with 8 genera and 70 species. These are perennial rhizomatous herbs found in aquatic habitats nearly worldwide. Leaves arising directly from rhizome, lanceolate to ovate, alternate or opposite, floating, submersed, or emergent; margins entire, dissected, or serrated; petioles long. Flowers are solitary, radial, diurnal or nocturnal, floating or submersed; 5-12 sepals; petals numerous, occasionally lacking. Fruits are berries, nuts or capsules. Pollination by beetles, flies, bees, wind, or self-pollinated.
