Purple-flowering Raspberry (Rubus odoratus) Linneaus, 1753

Rubus odoratus is native to eastern North America, east and south of the Great Lakes, including the Appalachian Mountains; introduced to the West Coast of North America, and in Europe. This species grows in moist deciduous forests, along forest edges, stream banks, rocky slopes, and roadsides; 10-1500 m. It is a shrub with perennial, erect, sparsely to moderately hairy unarmed stems, 1-3 m in height. Leaves are deciduous, palmate (usually 5 lobes), with finely serrate margins. Flowers are in terminal and axillary cymes (4-7 per inflorescence); 5 wide, magenta (or rarely white), petals. Fruits are red, with 30-60 drupelets. R. odoratus blooms in May-July; the fruit matures in late summer-early autumn.
