Rubiaceae (Madder) |
The Rubiaceae contain 610 genera and ca. 13,700 species. The family is near-cosmopolitan, with the highest diversity in the humid tropics and subtropics. These are shrubs, trees, herbs, or lianas. The leaves are entire, often with leafy stipules on each side of the petiole; opposite or in whorls. The flowers are actinomorphic, usually tubular, with 4-6 fused petals; white or creamy, sometimes yellow, red, or blue; arranged in cymes (terminal or axillary). The fruit is a berry, drupe, capsule, or schizocarp. Several species are of economic importance, including Coffea arabica.
