Sarraceniaceae (Pitcherplant) |
Sarraceniaceae comprises 3 genera and 17 species of carnivorous plants which lure insects with nectar into their elongated, tube-shaped leaves filled with water (pitchers). Pitcherplants usually grow in nutrient-poor, often acidic soil and use the insects as a nutritional supplement. Digestive enzymes are either produced by the plants themselves or commensal invertebrates and bacteria. The family is native to the Americas.
