Osmundastrum cinnamomeum grows in swamps, bogs and moist woodlands in the eastern North America (from Labrador to Mexico), Central and South America (south to Paraguay), the West Indies, and eastern and southeastern Asia (from southeastern Siberia to Indochina). The fertile cinnamon-colored sporangia give the species its name.
