Amphisbaenas (Amphisbaenia)

The amphisbaenians (or worm-lizards) are squamate reptiles with long wormlike bodies and rudimentary eyes. Most species are limbless, although the genus Bipes retains forelimbs. The sub-order contains six families and over 195 species. The amphisbaenians are most diverse in South America, Africa, and the Caribbean; several species reach as far north as Florida, Mexico, Spain, and the Middle East.
