Snapping Turtles (Chelydridae) |
The Chelydridae contains two extant genera of large freshwater turtles, Chelydra and Macrochelys, with 2-5 species overall. They occur from eastern North Americas to northern South America. These turtles have large heads with very strong jaws, thick limbs which cannot be fully retracted within the shell, and long tails.
