Undescribed new salamander
(Pseudoeurycea sp.)

 

 

 

This species is known from one adult male discovered in Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve (Queretaro, Mexico) in 2000. It was found during a night search in a selectively logged cloud forest at altitude 1,700 m. Measurements: total length (TL) 90 mm, tail 43 mm; 10 costal grooves. Body is dark grey to black with irregular white blotches (mostly in caudal area) and bluish iridophores. The last 2/5 of the tail, upper arms, and thighs were fleshy-red. Feet webbed (Gillingwater and Patrikeev 2004). The tail may be prehensile, and perhaps this species is semi-arboreal. This salamander likely represents a new undescribed species of Pseudoeurycea (=Aquiloeurycea), Bolitoglossa, or Chiropterotriton (the boundaries between these genera are defined by internal morphology); the individual was photographed, but not collected.
