Battus philenor ranges from the Lower Great Lakes and California, to Costa Rica. It is a rare visitor in southern Ontario, Canada. This species is found in old fields, meadows, open woodlands and riverine areas. The caterpillar feeds on Aristolochia (pipevine), while the adults drink nectar of a variety of flowers. In the north, the Pipevine Swallowtail flies from April to October, and throughout the year in the tropics.
