Scoliid Wasps (Scoliidae)

The Scoliidae (also known as the scarab hunters) are a family of over 140 genera and ca. 560 species found nearly worldwide. Medium-sized to large, robust and hairy; length 10-53 mm; the family includes some of the largest wasps in the world. Usually black with yellow or orange bands; wing tips with longitudinal wrinkles. Solitary wasps parasitizing on larvae of scarab beetles (Scarabaeidae). Female burrow into the ground in search of these larvae, and then paralyze them with the sting; it then excavates a nest burrow, moves the paralyzed larva there, and deposits an egg on it. Adults take nectar of some plants.
