Diaethria clymena ranges from Mexico to northern Argentina; strays to South Florida. It is found in wet tropics: rain and cloud forests, disturbed and edge habitats, e.g., near wetlands; from sea level to 2,000 m. The upperside is black with a blue band; the underside is red-and-white with black stripes reminiscent of a number "88". The wingspan is 38-44 mm. Adults feed at rotting fruit, dung, but also on nectar, and the caterpillar on Trema spp. (Cannabaceae) and Theobroma spp. (Malvaceae). Diaethria clymena flies from March to November in South America.
