Leafwings (Charaxinae)

The Charaxinae are a subfamily of nymphalid butterflies with ca. 400 species. They are found mainly in the tropics, although some species reach temperate regions of North America, Eurasia, and southern Australia. The underwings in the majority of species are mottled gray or brown below, and the hindwings have serrated edges. Adults are attracted to rotten fruit, carrion, and dung, and rarely seen in flowers.
