The Nymphalidae are medium-sized to large butterflies, with a brush-like set of hairs on their forelegs. Many species are brightly coloured. This is the largest family of butterflies with 12 subfamilies, 40 tribes, 542 genera, and ca. 6,000 species distributed throughout the world.
