Milkweed butterflies include ca. 300 species associated with various milkweeds (Asclepiadaceae). The subfamily is distributed worldwide, although the majority of species occurs in the tropics. The tribe Ithomiini is sometimes treated as a subfamily on its own, Ithomiinae.
