Heliconians or Longwings (Heliconiinae) |
The Heliconiinae are a subfamily of the Nymphalidae containing 45-50 genera and ca. 200 species. They are most diverse in the tropics, particularly in South America, although fritillaries reach subarctic biomes. These are predominantly reddish and black butterflies with elongated forewings. Adults drink nectar of various flowers and absorb dissolved nutrients at mud puddles; caterpillars of many tropical species feed on toxic plants, particularly of the Passifloraceae, making the larvae and the adults unpalatable. Caterpillars of the northern species feed on Fabaceae, Asteraceae, Violaceae, etc.
