The Red-spotted Purple occurs in southern Ontario, and the in the United States, mostly south of the Great Lakes and north-central New England. The White Admiral is usually found further north. Much hybridization occurs where these subspecies are sympatric. The Red-spotted Purple is a mimic of the poisonous Pipevine Swallowtail (Battus philenor).
