Satyrids or Brown Butterflies
(Satyrinae)

The Satyrinae is the biggest subfamily of the Nymphalidae comprising over 250 genera with ca. 2,500 species. The Morphinae are sometimes included within this group, but we treat them separately. Satyrids are distributed worldwide, reaching many remote oceanic islands. These are small to medium-sized butterflies, mostly brown, orange or black. Many species shun bright sunlight. The caterpillars feed on grasses, sedges, palms, etc.
